There is something I noticed watching these episodes as an adult that I didn't notice as a kid. I always wondered why that was, when I like the other annoying characters so much. I thought he was too weird, and annoying, and the episodes that focused on him were usually my least favorite. Now, I never liked Johnny, back when I was a kid.

Johnny is one of the most interesting characters on the show, and I'll tell you why. The next person we get introduced to, is Johnny. The first person who passes by is Kevin on his bike, who looks at Ed before calling him a DORK, and speeding off.

So, the plan has them use reverse psychology to lure the Serial Toucher, with Ed hooked up to an alarm if anyone touches him. He could have put his abilities to extremely good use. Eddy comes up with the plans, Double D builds the shit, and Ed is the test monkey.

So, here, we get the thing I was talking about early. Rolf and Nazz have no lines in this episode, not counting non-descript background rabble. Deeper or something, I'm not sure.Įddy declares that the Eds will catch the Serial Toucher and bring him to justice, and Kevin and Sarah both say they would pay money to see that, and the other kids agree. Oh, and Kevin's voice also sounds a little different here. Interesting, Eddy is already immediately self-aware of the first DORK, throwing it back in Kevin's face. Often confused with nerd and geek, but does not imply the same level of intelligence. (pejorative, slang) A quirky, silly and/or stupid, socially inept person, or one who is out of touch with contemporary trends. We'll get his super effeminate, best friend to "Fag Hag" Sarah later on.Īnd Kevin.Well, we all know how that goes. Jimmy isn't shown to be anything more than kind of a pasty, braces wearing kid. So here, in this scene, Jimmy gets a line, and Kevin gets a line.

Sarah is always the bratty, violent little sister who bosses Ed around.Īlso, another thing I come to love about this series is the amazing use of sound effects, shown here when rabid cats sounds are used as Sarah tears apart the couch. In fact, I think I can say that the two characters that change the least are her and maybe.Rolf? Everyone besides Sarah is shown to show hidden depths, and things you didn't think their character would do or be capable of. Sarah is a character that changes very very little over the course of the series. She stomps down the stairs, demanding to know where her "Polly Poo Poo" doll is. The always sweet and lovable Sarah, Ed's little sister. So, now we are treated to the first character besides the Eds. Eddy's is the only one that sounds like it does later on. Ed really isn't that stupid in these really early episodes, especially not this one. The show does a good job of showing, that despite their differences and idiosyncrasies, they are still young boys, and they are all still best friends.Īlso, super important to note. This repeats several times until he goes to the doorbell, and a bucket falls on his head. He starts walking away, and again no one is there. Double D goes to the doorbell and no one is there. So then the doorbell, rings and we get the first gag of the series, and a truly great one. Interestingly, Double D's voice is very raspy in these early episodes. Everything in his room has a label, including his cactus Jim, and the 4,837 ants in his ant farm. Neat, orderly, very intelligent, and labeling everything. Right away, he is characterized by traits he will come to be known as for the entire series. We're introduced first to Double D, who actually isn't yet called "Double D" in this episode. The music used in this very first scene isn't actually used very often later, and isn't one of the regular leitmotifs the show is known for. In reality, this was an intentional reference to older cartoons, which had general blocks of color for background objects that kids "never pay attention to." A clear example of this is Edd's House, whose blue color goes beyond its boundaries. What appears to be bad designing is clear throughout the first few episodes of the series.
